Happy Monday! A lot of great articles and news so enjoy!
With the age of the internet becoming bigger and sometimes invasive, privacy is thrown away. Starting May 25, 2019, the European Union is trying to fight back. The government has introduced new laws and motions which help protect users from having their persional information used unfairly. If companies fail to comply, they can be hit with massive fines; up to 4% which is equivalent to approximately $1.6 billion for Facebook. These new laws which cover from social media to financial institutions, help protect users from having their personal information used unfairly. If you feel your information is being misused, you can contact that company and they would have to delete your information. It would also help in not seeing ads every two posts. This law has 11 chapters and 99 sub articles so there’s a lot to look over and companies can obviously fight back.
Over the past year, Fidelity has discovered that many of its employees have been misusing their reimbursement program. Employees would get almost 20% of computers and other electronics. The company did some research and found out that those fired employees pocketed about $2,000. As always, employees tried to fight back against the firings and took it as far as they could. But Fidelity stood by the accusations and said they were fired solely for the misuse.
Uber has been testing out self-driving cars recently. Tragically, one of their cars had a software malfunction which caused a crash and the death of Elaine Herzberg. Herzberg was crossing the street and the car failed to use the break or sound an alarm. Uber says that the reason for this accident is a fault is with the car’s higher logic where decisions are made, similar to a human brain. The car picked Herzberg up in the cameras but sited it as a false positive. In any case this isn’t a good thing for Uber’s self driving movement. My heart and prayers are with Elaine Herzberg’s family.
For any gammer, comic lover, or just movie geek, here’s a story for you! As you know, Infinity War is currently the biggest movie of 2018 and Fortnite is one of the biggest games of 2018. The developers of Fortnite and directors of Infinity War have teamed up and Thanos will be put into the Battle Royale Shooter! Since the directors of Infinity War are big fans of Fortnite, this partnership was bound to happen. Becoming Thanos is pretty easy; if you find the Gauntlet during the Battle Royale you will turn into Thanos (awesome!). This mode will go live tomorrow (May 8). Good Luck and happy gaming!
Emily Purdom and Rachel Robinson have started a company that is helping young students around the country with communication disorders access therapy in their schools. The founders of DotCom Therapy have decided to use computers and technology to help address the lack of therapy in some schools. Their company has 91 therapists that are standing by to help kids with communication disorders. Sometimes parents can’t travel everywhere to get the help their children need. Purdom and Robinson saw a need for telepractice and teletherapy while they attended Missouri State University. They say that telepractice and teletherapy weren’t taught as options for therapy. The founders felt telepractice and teletherapy are very valuable and effective options. There are some issues/problems with their company but if they keep working, Purdom and Robinson can be pioneers in a new field. Best of luck!
